There are many tools available for writing effective grant applications including instructions directly from the NIH. However, there is little information available to investigators about what peer reviewers specifically look for in a grant application that will influence them and therefore influence how each of the five review criteria are scored and how the grant is viewed overall. Principal Investigators are often unaware of the many details that can derail their grant review and are often unaware of the ways that they can positively influence the peer reviewer thus increasing their favor.

During this one-of-a-kind Webinar, your expert presenter, Dr. Christopher Dant, will reveal what peer reviewers want to see in the typical NIH R grant application–R21 and R01. Specifically, you will be presented with various views from peer reviewers on how they review applications, what they do and do not want to see, and how this influences their decisions.

The evidence presented comes directly from research carried out by the presenter and his colleagues by assembling peer reviewer focus groups and reviewing a number of grants and summary sheets from all scientific fields with a range of scores. This presentation will discuss the major themes that were discovered as well as the personal experience of the presenter as a peer reviewer and that of his colleagues at his institution.

5 Key Take-Aways:

  • Several ways to influence a peer reviewer positively about your research in your grant application.
  • Some review committees use a “discussant’ who is not in the specific field and what they look for and how to influence them.
  • Learn how reviewers score the R grant.
  • Learn where peer reviewer look for information relating to the 5 review criteria and how to positively influence them.
  • Learn about the 3 most important aspects influencing a peer reviewer–impact, feasibility, significance.

Who Should Attend:

  • Any PI who writes an NIH R grant..
