Most of you are probably familiar with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and its process for awarding grants, but how much do you know about the National Science Foundation (NSF)? Could it also be your next funding ally?

There is strong overlap in the types of projects funded by NIH and NSF. Both are committed to training; for instance NIH provides pre- and post-doctoral fellowships and institutional training grants. And though both are interested in education, NSF is far more so: It awards graduate and post-doctoral fellowships and grants to undergraduate students and K-12 educators. NIH champions new investigators and offers Pathway to Independence Awards, Career Development Awards and New Innovator Awards.

During this insightful webinar, your expert presenter, Dr. Marjorie Piechowski, takes a closer look at each of these funding agencies, their missions, size and scopes of operation, and describes the four major areas of difference between the NIH and the NSF to help principal investigators choose the right one, and prepare targeted, effective proposals increasing their funding chances.

5 Key Take-Aways:

  • Understanding the difference in purpose, mission and focus of the two major funders of scientific research
  • Knowing the differences in proposal format and approach in NIH and NSF
  • Developing appropriate budgets and budget narratives tailored to each of the two agencies
  • Seeing how the review process affects proposal development
  • Targeting the proposal to the appropriate reviewers/programs to increase chances of success

 Who Should Attend?

Principal investigators whose research is flexible enough to be submitted either to NSF or NIH; new investigators unfamiliar with the characteristics of these two federal granting agencies; PIs who have consistently submitted to one of the two agencies and are looking for alternate sources of research support
